The Hanston school system originated in
the late 1800's as a small village school in
the township of Marena (see our history
page on the relationship between Marena
and Hanston). In 1926 on the west edge of
Hanston a two story brick building was
constructed to house the new rural high
school. A modern grade school and high
school gym were added in 1952. November
1984 the present high school building was
Hanston High School's football field was renamed in the spring of 2005 in honor of long time head football coach Jerry Slaton. Many of the 250 wins in Coach Slaton's illustrious career came on this field, in front of an ever faithful Hanston crowd.

For decades Hanston High school has been widely known for their athletics. The Hanston Elks
football & basketball team won several state champioship. However academics scores for this small
school were among the best in the state.
The 2005-2006 school year was the last for the Hanston school system to stand alone as the Mighty
Elks. USD 228 entered a contractual agreement with the Pawnee Heights school system, the Hanston
facility is now Pawnee Heights at Hanston. The school houses the junior high/middle school for the
newly aligned school districts. High school students attend classes at the Rozel High School. While
the Junior High attend classes at Hanston and the grade school is in Burdett. The Tiger mascot was
adopted for all schools and school colors are blue and red for the high school while blue and orange
will adorn the middle school students. Although the Mighty Elk will not fade from local memory soon,
the Tigers will take this area's education into the future, and no doubt bring this region the same
pride and accomplishments it has enjoyed for decades!
