Welcome to
HANSTON  SCHOOLS
The Hanston school system originated in
the late 1800's as a small village school in
the township of Marena (see our history
page on the relationship between Marena
and Hanston). In 1926 on the west edge of
Hanston a two story brick building was
constructed to house the new rural high
school. A modern grade school and high
school gym were added in 1952. November
1984 the present high school building was
Hanston High School's football
field was renamed in the
spring of 2005 in honor of long
time head football coach
Jerry Slaton. Many of the 250

illustrious career came on this
field, in front of an ever faithful

constructed.
For decades Hanston High school has been widely known for their athletics. The Hanston Elks
football & basketball team won several state champioship. However academics scores for this small
school were among the best in the state.
The 2005-2006 school year was the last for the Hanston school system to stand alone as the Mighty
Elks. USD 228 entered a contractual agreement with the Pawnee Heights school system, the Hanston
building facilited the Pawnee Heights Junior. High school students attended classes at the Rozel High
School, while the grade school students were in Burdett.
The 2009-2010 school year brought another change to this area's educational landscape. As a
consolidation effort between the two school districts failed with the schools parting company at the
end of the 2009-2010 school year.
Hanston joined with the Jetmore schools system for the 2010-2011 school year. The new school
system will consolotade after the 2011 school year and will become the Hodgeman County School
System. Thus begin the era of the Longhorn.
Mighty Elk live on in the hearts and minds of these small towns residents and will not fade from local
memory soon. However the Hodgeman County School System will educate area students well into the
next decade, and the Longhorns will dominated the county landscape.
